THE BAR CONVENT is England's oldest living convent, founded in as a school for girls. Still home to a community of Catholic sisters today, the building is also open to visitors all year round.

A state-of-the-art exhibition tells the three-hundred-year story of our home, while our award-winning café and guesthouse offer a peaceful haven. For the study of Mary Ward we rely mainly on transcripts, as the original papers are in Munich. The history of the Bar Convent itself is supported by its own documents, including letters, journals, registers and a special collection of account books dating fromfrom which a vivid picture of school and convent life can be drawn.
